Somersault Season Lyrics - July 14, 2009

Spring
SWOOSH SWOOSH
Swoosh Swoosh goes the wind
Drip Drop goes the rain
Boink Boink go the plants
It’s Spring It’s Spring the birdies sing
Tweet tweet tweet

Swoosh swoosh--make big sweeping motions with your hands and arms
Drip Drop – take your index fingers and alternate poking them down like falling raindrops
Boink Boink – now close your fists and turn them up, pop your index fingers up like little plants poking up out of the soil
Birds – keep your index fingers straight, turn your fists over, make a bird beak with your index finger and thumb, and make chirping noises!
Then just do it all over again faster and faster and faster!!!!

MY BROTHER’S A MONSTER
My Brother’s a Monster and I’m a Monster too
And when we get together we do what monsters do.
We growl and roar and shuffle around
And shake our claws and we twist our pointy ears
And then we stomp around the floor
And show off our big monster teeth
And yawn a monster yawn and after all that marching
Let’s take a monster nap and we walk off singing.

This song is self explanatory and you can find a video on youtube that shows how I teach it.  Lots of folks make up their own version.  You can sing my mom is a monster, my dad is a monster,
We eat like monsters do, we sing like monsters do
We ????  What do your monsters do?
Always remind monsters that we don’t bite or claw other monsters!

1, 2, 3, 4
1, 2, 3, 4 everybody touch the floor
5, 6, 7, 8, y’all are looking so great
I think you should DANCE (5X)

1, 2, 3, 4 everybody touch the floor
9, 12, 11, 3 everybody tickle your knee
4, 8, 62 everybody tie your shoe
5, 6, 7, 8 y’all are looking so great
I think you should DANCE (5X)

1, 2, 3 4 everybody touch the floor
19, 12, 11, 20 everybody find a penny
4, 5, 56 everybody pick up sticks
5, 6, 7, 8 y’all are looking so great
I think you should DANCE (5X)

Dance Party!
1, 2, 3, 4 everybody touch the floor
That’s all there is there ain’t no more
So quit that knocking at my back door.
Knock
I think you should DANCE

I make this song up every time.  So have fun with the numbers and rhymes:  show me your thumb, a billion /everybody count to a million, etc. Another version is around the 3rd verse when I get to the “I think you should DANCE,” I change the action from dance to I think you should wiggle, I think you should jump up and down, I think you should turn around, I think you should cluck like a chicken – (and then finally) I think you should DANCE.
This song can go on for a long time and is great for wrangling a pack of wild 4 year olds.

Summer
FLOWER DANCE
Flowers dancing in the garden
In the summer time the summer time
Woo look at those flowers
(Wave your hands up in the air like flowers)
Fireflies flashing to their sweetie
Will you be mine will you be mine
(Everybody Wink wink wink)
Big ole bite of Watermelon tastes divine
(Hold that imaginary watermelon slice and Chomp chomp chomp)
In the sum sum sum summer time

Most times in June we sit around and croo oo oo oon
To the light of the silvery moon
(Hold your arms up in a big circle over your head like a full moon)
La la la la la la (monster style if you wish)

(Repeat same words, just faster)

Now sing in your crooniest voice  La la la (Opera style if you wish.  You can sing like Frank Sinatra if you prefer)
Here come a few fairies la la la  - how do fairies sing?
Hello Mr. Troll la  la la – how do trolls sing?
A magic frog la la la – how do frogs sing?

Most times in June we sit around and croo oo oon
To the light of the silvery moon
La la la la la la
In the sum sum sum summer time

Feel free to add other croony voices to the creatures in your garden.

Chorus
Chorus (Because it’s fun to sing this over and over!!!!)
Tiny city itsy bitsy city teeny weeny city BIG

Try going up on “big” and down on “little,” either sitting up straight and then slumping down or standing and crouching  – watch out for the tricky part on the 4th time through!

CAN YOU SHAKE IT
Chorus
Can you shake it (X10) all around?
Can you shake it (X10) through the town?

Can you shake it up high?
Can you shake it down low?
Can you shake it really fast?
Can you shake it really slow?

Can you shake it over here?
Can you shake it over there?
Can you shake it on your tummy?
Can you shake it in your hair?

Chorus

Can you shake it on your knee?
Can you shake it saying PLEASE?
Can you shake it at the sky?
Can you shake it asking why?

Can you shake it on your nose?
Can you shake it on your toes?
Can you shake it jumping up and down?
Can you shake it with your eyes closed?

Can you shake it really tall?
Can you shake ti really small?
Can you shake it really loud?
Can you shake it not at all?

Shake it any way you want to!!!

Chorus

This is another great focus song and after the first two verses I make it up every time I sing it.

Fall
IN THE FALL
In the fall in the fall
Pick a pumpkin from the pumpkin patch
In the fall in the fall
Pick an apple from the apple tree
In the fall in the fall
You better knit a sweater for you and me
It’s getting kind of chilly wait and see
We can get silly in a pile of leaves
In the fall in the fall

In the fall in the fall
Dressing up for Halloween
In the fall in the fall
See how scary you can be
In the fall in the fall
I thought I saw a jack-o-lantern laughing at me
Saying trick or treat how much candy can you eat
In the fall in the fall

In the Falllllll Fallllllll
Leaves red and gold
In the Falllll Fallllll
I can hear the wind it’s blowing kind of cold

Whoooooo (make some wind noises)

Repeat first verse

Act this song out, and when you get to the fall part, FAAAAALLLLL down.

FRANKENSTEIN
Who’s got green skin?
Who’s really big?
Who’s got black hair?
I think it’s a wig.
It’s Frankenstein and he’s my friend
It’s Frankenstein true to the end it’s
F f f f f f f f  Frankenstein
F f f f f f f f  Frankenstein

He’s got really big feet
Size 19
He’d be a great addition to a basketball team
He growls a lot
But he’s not mean
He’s the sweetest monster that you’ve ever seen

(Sing the song like Frankenstein)
It’s Frankenstein and he’s my friend
It’s Frankenstein true to the end it’s
F f f f f f f f  Frankenstein
F f f f f f f f  Frankenstein

He’s got really big feet
Size 19
He’d be a great addition to a basketball team
He growls a lot
But he’s not mean
He’s the sweetest monster that you’ve ever seen
Sweetest monster that you’ve ever seen

Who’s got green skin? Frankenstein
Who’s really big? Frankenstein
Who’s got black hair? Frankenstein
I think it’s a wig
It’s Frankenstein and he’s my friend
It’s Frankenstein true to the end it’s
F f f f f f f f  Frankenstein
F f f f f f f f  Frankenstein
F f f f f f f f  Frankenstein

LOOK IN A BOOK
If you find yourself in France
And wish to make a friend
But you don’t know a word of French
Don’t despair tear your hair
Hold your breath til you turn blue
Just have a seat on a park bench and
Look in a book.    Look in a book?
An encyclopedia? A French book

You’ll be parlez-vous-ing left and right
You’ll learn bonjour, ça va and c’est bien
And then you’ll learn bon soir which means goodnight

If you’re getting really hungry
And you wander to the kitchen
But you don’t know how to cook
Don’t stomp your feet and frown
Or start jumping up and down
Just put on an apron and
Look in a book.  Look in a book
A French book?  A cook book
You’ll be sure to find a yummy recipe
Measure mix and stir find the correct temperature
You’ll be cooking up a meal with ease

If you’re bored bored bored
And you’re feeling kind of blue and
Your parents never take you anywhere
Don’t tie your socks in knots
Or put glue in the locks
Just find yourself a cozy nook somewhere and
Look in a book.   Look in a book
A cook book?  An adventure book
You’ll be meeting pirates on the seven seas
You’ll be swimming with mermaids
Finding treasure down in caves
My friends you’ll have it made
If you look in a book.   Look in a book
Any subject under the sun
Look in a book  Look in a book
Reading is such fun!!!

Yet another song to act out!

Winter
NO TWO ALIKE
Words by Nancy McGalliard and Laura Freeman
Music by Laura Freeman

No two alike
They are frosty white
You see them day and night
They taste like cold and do not bite
They fall they fly but
They’re not kites
No two alike
What a delight
Each has 6 sides
And there’s no two alike

No two alike
They do not ride a bike
Sometimes they look like lace
They land upon your face
They don’t like sun it gives them a fright
It’s the winter time they seem to like
They are very light
And there’s no two alike

No two alike
How do we know
We can’t catch every snowflake
No two alike that’s what we’re told
Go ask any snow bank

Repeat first verse

This is a great song for waltzing around like snowflakes.

ANTARCTICA
Let’s all go to Antarctica
To Antarctica To Antarctica
It’s very cold in Antarctica
Oh I hope that we don’t FREEZE!

Let’s look for penguins in Antarctica
In Antarctica, In Antarctica
I hear there’s penguins all around down in Antarctica
Oh I hope that we don’t FREEZE!

Chorus
Because it’s cold
So cold so cold
So very cold
It’s cold so cold
Oh I hope that we don’t FREEZE!

Now let’s go up to the tip top of the globe to the north pole

Let’s all go to the north pole
To the North Pole
To the North Pole
It’s very cold at the North Pole
Oh I hope that we don’t FREEZE!

Let’s look for polar bears at the North Pole
At the North Pole At the North Pole
I hear that polar bears live up here at the North Pole
Oh I hope that we don’t FREEZE!

Chorus

Let’s go sliding down a glacier
An icy glacier a slippery glacier
It’s very cold on a glacier
Oh I hope that we don’t FREEZE!

Let’s slip slip slide down a glacier
An icy glacier it’s just ice that glacier
It’s cold cold cold on a glacier
Oh I hope that we don’t FREEZE!

Chorus

Another march but this time whenever I say “freeze,” FREEZE in place. Sometimes I have to unfreeze folks before we can continue on our explorations.  We can act out looking for penguins and polar bears, walking like penguins and polar bears, and slipping and sliding down a glacier is always fun.  The irony of this song is that I live in TEXAS so it’s not usually very cold. This song is ideally sung on a hot day in August when you WISH you were cold.  It’s very fun to get the kids shivering and chattering their teeth when it’s 102˚ F. outside.

I HEAR THE MUSIC IN THIS TOWN
I hear the music in this town
I hear the music in this town
I hear it everywhere
It’s floating all around
I hear the music in this town

I hear the birds up in the trees
I hear the birds up in the trees
See that one there
She’s a-singing just for me
I hear the birds up in the trees
Can you make some bird noises?
I hear the train out on the track
I hear the train out on the track
I don’t know where it’s a-goin’ to
Or if it’s ever coming back back back
I hear the train out on the track
Let’s hear some train sounds!
I hear the bees buzzin’ around
I hear the bees buzzin’ around
They’re all buzzy wuzzy fuzzy
Ooh la la look at all the flowers they found
I hear the bees buzzin’ around
Buzz like a Bee
I hear the kids running and a-laughing
I hear the kids running and a-laughing
And the dogs are barking and the cats are meowing
And the chickens are just a-scratching
I hear the kids running and a-laughing
Can you giggle and sing at the same time?
Repeat first verse

This song is about sitting quietly and listening. Make up verses about what you hear, for instance, right now I hear my Chihuahua, Pogo.
I hear my Chihuahua, Pogo/ He’s making a cozy little bed/ so he can rest his little head. I hear my Chihuahua, Pogo – See? It’s easy, go ahead!
Make up some more verses and send me your ideas –Happy Singing!
